Let me tell you what a “target plate” is during pressure testing and purging

The author has participated in numerous pipeline purging tests. Below are my personal views on the target plates; I welcome feedback and criticism from my colleagues. Target plates, also known as target sheets, are only used during the purging phase of individual pipeline installation projects. Its installation location: the point where the steam pipeline is connected to the equipment. Function: To check the cleanliness inside the steam pipes and prevent dirty substances from being blown into the equipment. Material: Generally aluminum sheet (5mm thick). Size: 1/8 of the diameter of the purge pipe.
That’s right. But we often check by using a galvanized iron sheet to block the outlet at a certain section; sometimes we have to remove the short section to see if any dirt comes out. However, when the pipe diameter is large but the steam flow is low, slag and similar substances often cannot be carried away; therefore, we still need to remove the filter during atmospheric and vacuum distillation operations as well as in open-loop cycles. Moreover, purging is likely to blow dirt into the gate valve’s passage, causing wear on the sealing surfaces. So, if one wants to take full responsibility for the piping equipment, it is necessary to disconnect the flanges section by section and perform purging and testing.
