Friends in the hydrogenation industry, how much hydrogen does each of you consume per ton of raw material processed? I hope everyone can share this information with one another. Of course, the amount of hydrogen consumed is related to the properties of the raw materials, the quality requirements of the product, and the catalyst.
80-100 standard cubic meters
For hydrorefining, it’s around 50 cubic meters per ton, assuming the feedstock contains a high proportion of light components
The answers given by those upstairs are inaccurate; I have observed that the pre-hydrogenation during reformation is 5 Nm3/t; Aviation fuel hydrogenation: 3 Nm3/t ; Diesel hydrogenation: Atmospheric pressure direct diesel hydrogenation: 30 Nm3/t (for sulfur content of 450 PPm), 40 Nm3/t (for sulfur content of 350 PPm). Catalytic diesel hydrogenation: 60 Nm3/t (for sulfur content of 450 PPm), 70 Nm3/t (for sulfur content of 350 PPm)
Hehe, ours is relatively low (due to high-quality raw materials) – around 27 only. Hehe, after reading what the original poster wrote about the rating… Just to add: it’s 27 NM3H2/M3 oil, with a S content of around 1500 PPM. This post was last edited by Yumi on 2009-2-23 08:09
For hydrocracking, it’s on average 200 Nm/t; we also consume some coker wax, at 500 Nm/t
The hydrogen consumption in hydrogenation occurs mainly in four areas: chemical hydrogen consumption, dissolved hydrogen consumption, hydrogen leakage, and hydrogen emissions. For a hydrogenation capacity of 600,000 tons, with an feed rate of 91 tons per hour, the hydrogen consumption is 110,000 Nm3 per hour
My friend’s factory uses a hydrogenation reforming unit – it doesn’t have a pressure reduction system like ours, but it is capable of refining more aviation fuel; their capacity is 800,000 tons per year, with a production rate of 124 tons per hour, and 25 tons of hydrogen per hour – roughly 0.2 tons of hydrogen per ton of oil

Our design calls for 400,000 tons per year of hydrogenated tail oil, with a demand for 3,000 m³/h of fresh hydrogen. However, this is still just a design phase at present – it has not been put into operation yet – so it’s not known exactly how much fresh hydrogen will be needed in reality! ~
We use 25% charcoal and 75% petroleum diesel; generally, about 105 cubic meters of hydrogen are consumed per ton of fuel. The sulfur content in the resulting diesel is usually around 380 PPM
For 600,000 tons of hydrogenation, the hydrogen consumption per hour is roughly 10,000 cubic meters
With 600,000 tons of hydrogenation, the processing capacity should be 75 tons per hour.
