The development of the polysilicon industry in Shaanxi Province is off to a good start. 2008/09/19 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Silicon is an important raw material for industries such as information technology and photovoltaics; with the rapid growth of these emerging industries, the silicon industry has become a strategically important sector with fast growth, attracting significant attention from countries around the world. In recent years, driven by policies promoting renewable energy, the global installed capacity for photovoltaic power generation has increased rapidly, which in turn has led to a sharp rise in demand for polysilicon, a key material used in the upstream sector of the photovoltaic industry. In 2007, China’s total consumption of polysilicon was around 6,000 tons, while production amounted to only 1,100 tons. It is estimated that by 2010, China’s demand for polysilicon will exceed 30,000 tons, and the existing production capacity is far from sufficient to meet this demand. Therefore, it is highly necessary to introduce advanced foreign production technologies, increase efforts in independent innovation, and develop the polysilicon industry. It is understood that by the end of this year, China’s polycrystalline silicon production capacity will reach 4,200 tons per year, with ongoing and planned projects adding another 28,000 tons per year to that capacity. However, experts predict that by 2010, no more than 15,000 tons per year will actually be capable of being produced and put into use. Shaanxi Province possesses the resources, technology, and industrial advantages necessary for developing the silicon industry. “During the 11th Five-Year Plan period, the province planned to build a polysilicon production capacity of 3,000 tons per year, with medium- to long-term targets of 5,000–10,000 tons. To date, four polysilicon production lines have been established in cities such as Xianyang, Weinan, Yulin, and Shangluo.
