1. Standard Hardware Control Processor (CP) The control processor is the heart of the distributed control system, it performs virtually all the control functions within the area of ​​plant it is assigned to. These functions include: · Opening and closing isolation valves · Starting and stopping drives · Regulation of flows, levels, temperatures etc. · Totalizing flows · Sequential operations · Generate process alarms The control processors are “fault tolerant” that is to say that if a fault develops on the card, the CP will continue to operate normally. This is achieved in practice by having a pair of CPs 'married' together sharing the same information. Each one of the pair monitors the other and if it detects a failure, disables it. In the event of a CP failure, a system alarm is generated. Field Bus Module (FBM) The FBMs provide the link between the CP and the outside world. All field connections to the CP are made through FBMs. FBMs come in a number of different types, each with a different function.
