What is the function of the capacitor attached to an oil-free air compressor?

The oil-free air compressor purchased by my company comes with a capacitor – is it a start-up capacitor, or does it have any other functions as well? Also, if it’s just a start-up capacitor, can I understand it this way: once the air compressor starts up, that capacitor ceases to function, is that right?
It’s a start-up capacitor; it stops working after the device starts up.
