What is the Euro II standard for vehicle emissions, and do domestic vehicles meet it?

The Euro II emission standard refers to the criteria for exhaust gas emissions. China adopts European standards; it began implementing the Euro I emission standard in 1999, ceased the production and use of leaded gasoline in the same year, and stopped manufacturing cars equipped with carburetors. In the next two years, China will begin to implement Euro II emission standards, and Beijing and Shanghai, which have successfully hosted the Olympic Games and World Expo respectively, will implement these standards ahead of schedule. Most newly produced cars in the country have already met the Euro II emission standards, and preparations for producing cars that meet the Euro III standards are also underway. Meanwhile, **the relevant authorities are establishing a system for monitoring emissions from vehicles in use. Starting from January 1, 2004, Beijing will raise the exhaust emission standards for motor vehicles from the current European Standard I to European Standard II, with European Standard III coming into effect by 2008.
