Cellulose in plant cells is the main component of paper and a key raw material for ethanol production. Agronomists and plant physiologists from the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) of the United States worked together to develop plants whose lignin is more easily degraded. The transformed lignin can be easily degraded in a weakly alkaline environment, which also demonstrates the potential of this modification for cellulose utilization. Researchers have found that if the molecules in lignin contain ferulic acid and chlorogenic acid, it improves the availability of cellulose. They are now working on developing plants whose lignin contains ferulic acid. Furthermore, plants with modified lignin are easier to digest when used as feed, so this discovery also helps to save grain-based feed.
