PLC memory issue

I’m a beginner and have a question: Nowadays, computer memory is measured in gigabytes, but when I study the principles of PLCs and some microcontrollers, I see that the storage capacity mentioned there is only in the MB range, and it’s quite small. What’s the reason for this? Is it a speed issue? Or other reasons?
The programs for PLCs and microcontrollers are not large, so they don’t require much memory! Common PLC programs consist of a few hundred lines; in some cases they may have a few thousand lines, but this is quite rare!
What is memory used for? Used to store cache data! When there is not much data to exchange, the amount of memory required is naturally less. The applications of PLCs are fixed, and the number of variables required is limited; beyond that, they have no other uses, so the amount of memory needed is naturally small.
