Our company is a new chemical enterprise that is currently going through environmental compliance inspections. For handling waste gases, we use activated carbon for adsorption and regeneration. The problem is that the environmental protection authorities are asking us how long it takes for the activated carbon to become saturated, and how we can determine when it has reached saturation. How long does it take for it to regenerate once? There are some issues I need everyone’s help to resolve. Also, the people from the Environmental Protection Bureau told us that there is a type of instrument that can be used for online monitoring; I’m not sure of the exact Chinese term for it, but I heard them mention VOC online monitoring. I’ve heard from people with experience that this device is very expensive and must be imported to be useful; I’ve also told the team responsible for installation that it will only cause more trouble after it’s installed. I hope everyone can help me think of a solution. Also, I’m wondering where this device can be purchased. Thank you! !
For the adsorption and regeneration of activated carbon used in exhaust gas treatment systems, this is something that the people in charge of technology at your company, or those who installed this system for you, should know
But the cost of installation is too high; the installation company thinks it’s unnecessary, and now I don’t know what to do
But the problem now is that the people from the Environmental Protection Agency ask us how long it takes for the activated carbon to become saturated, and how we can determine when it has reached saturation. How long does it take for it to regenerate once? 1. The time it takes for adsorption to reach saturation is determined based on the level of impurities in your waste gas, the amount of activated carbon used, and through calculations related to the processing process. 2. Once the activated carbon becomes saturated, the concentration of impurities in the waste gas does not change; testing is required to determine this. 3. Regarding the question of how long it takes, refer to point 1. Additionally, the environmental protection officials told us that there is an instrument that can be used for online monitoring; I’m not sure of the exact Chinese term for it, but I heard them mention VOC online monitoring. From what experienced people have told me, this type of instrument is very expensive and must be imported to be useful; when I spoke with the units responsible for its installation, they said that installing it would only create more problems. 1. There are online detection instruments for VOCs, TOCs, etc., and many of them are imported. You can search for specific models and manufacturers on Baidu or on websites related to instrument analysis. 2. After installation, it will be difficult to illegally discharge pollutants, as all historical data is stored in the instrument. I hope everyone can help me come up with a solution. Also, I wonder where such instruments can be purchased. 1. It is recommended that you ask the environmental protection agency for relevant documents to determine whether installation is indeed necessary. If installation is mandatory, then you will have to spend some money on it
I think the questions posed by the Environmental Protection Agency are indeed quite appropriate. I believe this is a question that should be answered by the design team. Activated carbon relies on surface adsorption to function, and its adsorption curve can be measured; it will definitely reach saturation after a certain period of time. Why didn’t the design team take this into account? If it’s not too much trouble, the activated carbon can be replaced regularly, with the used carbon being reused through regeneration. The instruments can be searched for online; if the price is high, they’re definitely available online
The time it takes for adsorption to reach saturation is determined based on the level of impurities in your exhaust gas, the amount of activated carbon used, as well as relevant process parameters. You can ask the design team to provide some design parameters to determine the replacement cycle for the activated carbon; the replaced activated carbon can be reused. There are many online monitoring instruments available nowadays, which can be installed in accordance with the requirements of the local environmental protection authorities.
Thank you all. Now I understand
