Is it vertical, with entry at the top and exit at the bottom? Is it still horizontal, or is it slightly tilted? The tubes I’m making now are vertical, but others say they should be slightly inclined horizontally. This catalytic reactor is tubular in design, and it is heated using an electric furnace. It depends on the specific reaction, as well as what catalyst is used and what the reactor looks like. For some reactions, both forward and reverse flow are possible, and both fixed-bed and fluidized-bed systems can be used. As for the issue of horizontal and vertical orientation you mentioned, fluidized beds are generally vertical, while fixed beds depend on the specific circumstances.

In the case of a plug-flow tubular reactor with a fixed bed, factors such as the possible direction of product flow and the state of the reactants need to be taken into consideration. If the product is a light gas, mixing can be better at the lower part, so a vertical reactor with the reactants entering from below and the products exiting from above is suitable. If a liquid is produced, the reaction tube may need to be tilted downward to facilitate liquid discharge; however, this could lead to some backmixing of the products, which might affect the yield of the reaction. It is recommended to decide on the placement of the reaction tubes based on the conditions of the reaction process. What I’ve seen are mostly vertical types, and they’re found in schools; they’re generally quite small, with some using quartz tubes while others use special steel tubes. There is a section in the middle where the catalyst is placed; the sides can be filled with wire or zeolite. Vapor and liquid pass through from above or below, and when the environmental conditions are suitable, the catalytic reaction can take place.
