Currently, new chemical projects are being constructed one after another, and many workers are needed. Usually, a few experienced senior employees oversee the new staff to get production up and running. To help new employees get up to speed as quickly as possible, what training activities should be carried out in sequence? Combining theory with practice has always been our best approach to date. How to train? How to get familiar with the site? I hope everyone will participate actively and share our experiences with others.
First is safety training. After completing the theoretical training, find a place to practice, and then apply what you’ve learned in theory while practicing. After building one’s own device, conduct simulated training.
Let me talk about our company’s experience. 1. New employees receive the first round of theoretical training, during which a general introduction to the training content is provided. 2. After the first round of theoretical training, participants can be assigned to various positions for on-site training, supervised by senior employees, for a period of 3 months. 3. After the on-the-job training is completed, the second round of theoretical training will be carried out. This training session is quite important, so it needs to be explained in detail. By this time, the new employees already have a basic understanding of the operations for their positions, but they still have many questions. In this theoretical training session, they are able to learn more in depth. It has seen a qualitative improvement. 4. Then, one training session is held each year. Including: theory, job operations, safety, etc.
The most important safety training for chemical plants. Next are the basic product knowledge and equipment operation, followed by training on the manufacturing process.
After completing three levels of safety training, the employee is assigned to a specific position, with a mentor designated to guide them. The training period is one year, during which time the mentor is responsible for ensuring safety. Once this year is up, the employee must pass strict theoretical and practical assessments before they can operate independently.
Level 3 training (education): plant level (company level), workshop (branch factory), class (workgroup)
It is generally divided into three levels of education. An introduction to the company’s workshops is also essential.
My advice: 1. Conduct an informational visit to get familiar with the factory environment, understand the equipment, and gain a practical understanding. 2. Work under supervision to gain further familiarity with the processes, with the goal of adapting to the main tasks of the position one is assigned to. 3. Under the guidance of a mentor, carry out practical operations to gradually meet the requirements of the position and be able to handle the job duties.
Level 3 training! The most important thing is safety training; it’s more crucial than anything else. Our company adheres to the principle that safety comes first, followed by environmental protection, then quality, and cost last. Although this might seem extreme, since implementing this policy, the company’s performance has improved significantly. The best part is that safety accidents have been virtually eliminated. Why? Pay attention to both aspects: new employees must receive training before starting work, and they have to take an exam after the training. After going to the workshop, they need to work under the supervision of a mentor for a period of time; during this time they are only allowed to observe, ask questions, and take notes – they are not allowed to perform any operations! One must gradually get familiar with the tasks, understand the properties of various materials, and be prepared for any possible emergencies... In any case, it’s not easy to train new workers, but the company offers extra bonuses for doing so!
The top priority is safety training, at the plant level, in workshops, and within teams; followed by safety tests in the workshops. Once these tests are passed, apprentices are assigned to learn the relevant manufacturing processes. As for the duration of training, it depends on the specific circumstances – in the chemical industry, it usually takes half a year to be ready for the tests and to become proficient in the skills required. For maintenance and electrical work, it generally takes one year. The longer training time for maintenance is because apprentices need to learn the procedures and methods for maintaining all the equipment in their respective workshops, while in electrical work, knowledge of the entire plant’s systems is necessary. Shutdowns are usually planned, and handling occasional faults requires even less time. Additionally, electrical work demands higher levels of precision; unlike in the chemical industry, where slightly adjusting the opening degree of a valve doesn’t affect production, making a mistake with electrical switches can lead to a shutdown, which is why the training period is relatively longer. Furthermore, the workshop must organize a safety exam once a year. Workshop employees must be issued safety production work permits, as well as the corresponding pressure vessel operation certificates. Actually, training new employees is quite simple. The three-level safety training is merely meant to meet the requirements of higher-level safety inspections; it’s not very useful. All that’s needed is to have them copy down some answers for a day. Proper training for new employees should take place at the team level, with them working alongside experienced workers for about a month – that’s basically enough. There’s a very true saying: the master shows the way, but it’s up to the individual to practice. The requirements for new employees aren’t really high. The first thing is discipline; that’s crucial. If discipline is maintained, everything else can be taught easily. It’s also important to ensure proper handover procedures and maintain cleanliness. Then there’s the requirement of knowing four things and being able to do three things – but these requirements are becoming less common these days. Next, it’s necessary for new employees to get familiar with the work site. Under strict disciplinary rules, the team leader will explain where they can work and where they cannot, as well as where the dangers lie. Once new employees get to know the experienced workers better, they’re ready to start working. In places where the requirements aren’t very high, it usually takes no more than a month. After all, operating in a chemical industry isn’t that complicated. There’s no need to make things as complicated as described in government reports… it’s completely unnecessary. In short, everything should be based on practicality. If someone is to be trained as a key employee or future leader, then the requirements are higher. After working in a team for half a year, they should be able to handle all the tasks involved in that team, and then learn the principles, processes, and equipment – it’s simple to learn while working. As long as they stay committed to their role at the grassroots level, they’ll be qualified after a year. Future training can then be handled by these key employees and future leaders. I treat our new employees by having them do both the heavy and light tasks (at first they can watch us work, and after a few shifts they can do the tasks themselves while we provide guidance); during the day, when they have free time, they are tasked with following the procedures, and at night they study the theoretical aspects. There is a test once a month, with symbolic rewards or punishments. Also, make sure to provide him with all the necessary materials. This way, it’s possible to take over the role quickly.
