Once, while the company’s vehicle was in use, lightning struck the ground, and as a result several of the safety guards on the flow meters were damaged. Later, those flow meters were connected directly to the base, without using the safety guards, and they have been used in that way ever since. I’m not sure what effects this might have

It depends on the type of position; safety barriers must be installed in hazardous positions. Grounding must be standardized.
Is the flow meter flameproof? Explosion-proof instruments may also require safety guards in some situations. This is safety; safety first

Our approach is to install safety barriers at both ends of the flow meter; after all, flow data can be very important, and losing it is troublesome
