Sulfuric acid is a colorless oily liquid with a melting point of 10.49°C and a boiling point of 338°C. Sulfuric acid is soluble in water; it has a strong water-absorbing capacity. It is an inorganic strong acid with high corrosivity and great chemical reactivity. Sulfuric acid production process: The production methods include the contact process and the nitration process. Uses of sulfuric acid: It is mainly used in the production of phosphoric acid, phosphate fertilizers, various sulfates, titanium dioxide (via the sulfuric acid process), detergents, dyes, pharmaceuticals, synthetic fibers, and more. It can also be used as an acid cleaner for enamel and metals, as a sulfonating agent and dehydrating agent in organic synthesis, as well as in metal smelting, petroleum refining, and the electronics industry. In 1746, the Englishman J. Roebuck built a lead chamber with sides of 6 feet in Birmingham; this was the world’s first factory to produce sulfuric acid using the lead chamber method. In 1911, the Austrian C. Oppel established the world’s first tower process plant in Hrušov. In 1875, the German E. Jacob built the first contact process plant for producing sulfuric acid at Kreuznach.
