This should be an unwritten customary rule.
1. The bolts are arranged at the midpoint of the span so that each bolt is subjected to roughly equal forces, thereby ensuring the sealing performance of the flange. With this centered arrangement, when the pipeline is laid horizontally, the topmost bolts are under tension while the bottommost bolts are under compression; however, with the bolts distributed at the midpoint, the situation improves. 2. By arranging the bolts evenly at the 6 o’clock position (the lowest point), there are no bolts in that area, which prevents corrosive substances inside the pipeline from reaching and corroding the threads of the bolts. 3. The even distribution of bolts at the midpoint is also intended to take into account situations where the working space is limited; this arrangement facilitates workers’ use of tools such as wrenches.
