The operating point of the pump (flow rate and head) is determined by the intersection of the pump’s performance curve and the characteristic curve of the pipeline downstream of the pump (H=H(static) + SQ^2). The flow rate can be adjusted by changing these two curves. Changing the operating curve of the pump can be achieved by adjusting its structure (such as by reducing the outer diameter of the impeller) and its speed (using a frequency converter). Changing the characteristic curve of the pipeline means changing S, which can be done by adjusting the valve opening degree (increasing or decreasing the local head loss, thereby increasing S).
