Quartz sand filter media is a water treatment filter material made from natural quartz ore, which is processed through crushing, washing, screening, acid treatment, drying, and secondary screening; There are mainly two types of quartz sand filters commonly used: ordinary quartz sand and refined acid-washed sand. Quartz sand filters possess the advantages of high hardness, good corrosion resistance, high density, high mechanical strength, and a large capacity to hold contaminants, which allows for a long service life; thus, it is an ideal material for chemical water treatment. Quartz sand filter media serves a filtering function; just as water percolates into the ground through sand and stones, it traps the suspended particles in the water, especially those tiny suspended substances. Use of quartz sand as a filtering material: Quartz sand is used in combination with filtering containers to trap particulate impurities such as suspended solids and colloids in water, thereby performing a filtering function. Ordinary quartz sand filter media: It is mainly used in wastewater treatment, and it can last for three to five years without any problems, as long as loss of the quartz sand is prevented. It doesn’t matter if it gets contaminated, because in wastewater treatment, sludge can undergo aerobic or anaerobic digestion to break down the pollutants present in the wastewater. Refined quartz sand filter media: Used in water purification; in sand filters, it needs to be replaced every 2 to 3 years. Once contaminated, the pollutants covering the quartz sand prevent it from functioning effectively as a filter, so replacement is necessary. Fibrous ball filter media are formed by bundling fiber strands, and compared to traditional rigid granular filter media, they offer advantages such as better elasticity, the tendency not to float on the water surface, larger pore spaces, a longer service life, and lower head loss. During the filtration process, the gaps in the filter layer gradually decrease in the direction of water flow, which is in line with the ideal characteristic of filter media – larger pores at the top and smaller ones at the bottom. This results in high efficiency, a fast filtration rate (20–85 m/h), a large capacity to trap pollutants, excellent filtration performance, and the possibility of regeneration. Backwashing can be carried out using vehicle-mounted water pumps, with the amount of water used for backwashing being 1–2% of the amount of water used for filtration; it is suitable for filtering water of various qualities. There are no other advantages besides the low price. Compared to fibrous filter media, it 1) cannot withstand high temperatures; at such temperatures, hardness tends to precipitate, causing secondary pollution to the water supply. 2) It tends to compact over time, resulting in a reduced filtering efficiency. 3) It has a heavy texture, and the backwashing requires a high water flow rate. 4) The filtration precision is not high.

Fiber filter media are prone to contamination, and once contaminated, they basically need to be replaced.
