I wonder what the experts’ views are on the principles for designing the baffles at the bottom of a distillation column (fractionation tower)? Let’s discuss it
The purpose of installing a baffle at the bottom of a distillation column is as follows: 1. After passing through the reboiler at the column bottom, part of the material in the bottom phase vaporizes, which changes the composition of the gas and liquid phases returning to the column. In other words, the composition of the liquid phase differs from that of the material originally in the column bottom. To maintain a stable composition of the material taken out from the column bottom, a baffle is installed, with the outlet and the feed inlet located on opposite sides of the column bottom. 2. The bottom of the tower level gauge should be installed on the side of the outlet from the tower bottom, to ensure that there is a certain liquid level in the tower bottom; otherwise, the actual liquid level cannot be measured.
