Why does “sweetening” mean desulfurization?

I had come across some English materials that mentioned \"sweetening\", and I simply assumed it meant \"to add sweetness\". Later, I felt something was off, so I looked it up today and found out that it actually means \"desulfurization\". Could anyone please help explain this? If it’s to be stipulated like that, then forget it……

In fact, the simpler the words, the more likely they are to be translated incorrectly or to be difficult to translate. \"Sweet\" also implies purification and the reduction of acidity. When used as a verb, \"sweeten\" is related to technical processes such as desulfurization; the corresponding term in Chinese for this is \"desulfurization\". In fact, the process of \"sweetening\" involves more than just desulfurization – it also includes other steps such as denitrification and dust removal. It can be understood as desulfurization, but the exact meaning should still be determined by referring to the text. :)
