Faced with increasingly fierce competition, the pressure to find employment is growing! There is a disconnect between market demand and the current talent situation. Relevant professionals hope to improve their skills to keep up with market developments, but in their pursuit of various certificates, they often end up following trends blindly. Failing to understand market trends and demands results in doubling the effort with half the outcome, wasting one’s precious time in vain. This report will analyze the current workforce structure, as well as the gap between market demand and the supply of talent, by examining the considerations of current professionals working in the pressure vessel industry when changing jobs and the issues they are concerned about. Key considerations for those in the pressure vessel industry (in order of priority): The company recruiting them, the training provided by the recruiting company, the location of work, salary, and leading companies in the industry. According to a survey conducted by Oliver Company in October 2008 among around 500 professionals working in the pressure vessel sector, 80%-90% of candidates prefer the four major classification societies and the Harvard Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company (HSB) as their preferred employers. The standards currently used in the pressure vessel industry on an international level are mainly ASME and PED; these two certification standards are in English, and few companies have obtained the relevant certifications. As a result, very few companies in China hold AI certificates, creating a significant demand for such certifications. This is a great advantage for candidates who are familiar with ASME standards. Therefore, what candidates are generally concerned about is training related to international standards such as ASME and PED; relatively, training provided by companies for various domestic exams is not the main reason for them to consider changing jobs. In fact, the companies that offer exams for AI certification (the four major classification societies and HSB) are indeed widely favored by job seekers. The geographical distribution of talent needs among companies in the industry: Considering factors related to job stability, companies all prefer to find candidates who live locally. The demand in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai is quite high, while there are relatively few talents in these regions, resulting in a supply shortage. In the Northeast region, there is a high demand for professionals who work with pressure vessels in Harbin, but currently very few people meet these market requirements. The supply and demand balance for people in the remaining coastal areas is now at saturation. Those working in pressure vessel-related fields are currently mainly located in the Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai regions, which is closely linked to the market demand in these areas. There are also many professionals in pressure vessel technology in other coastal areas as well as in the Beijing-Tianjin region in the west. Geographical distribution of professionals working in the pressure vessel industry: Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai: 57% ； Northeast region: 10% ； Northwest and Beijing-Tianjin regions: 16% ； Coastal areas: 17% ； Salaries in the pressure vessel industry: Based on our understanding of the market conditions, companies are willing to offer salaries of over 10,000 for candidates with experience in applying ASME standards; these salaries can range from 10,000 to 15,000, depending on the length of work experience. For candidates with AI certification, the salaries offered by companies range from 15,000 to 20,000. Before and after taxes can vary depending on other individual conditions. A survey of current professionals working in the field of pressure vessels shows that candidates with around 4 years of relevant work experience, familiarity with ASME standards, and good English skills are generally willing to accept a monthly salary in the range of 10,000 to 12,000 yuan. However, those with more than 5 years of experience and who work in an English-speaking environment require a monthly salary of 15,000 to 18,000 yuan. OCG’s opinion: For candidates aged 26–30, a lack of work experience and no exposure to ASME in their professional roles are the main reasons why they miss out on promotion and job transfer opportunities. Therefore, we recommend that professionals in this age group become familiar with international standards such as ASME and PED in order to enhance their value. For those familiar with ASME who are between 30 and 40 years old, it is difficult for them to use English proficiently in daily communication, and English constitutes a bottleneck in their development. We recommend practicing English regularly. Taking into account career prospects and family considerations, one should determine the focus of future development and strive to join internationally renowned companies with clear goals in mind. For hiring organizations, a bachelor’s degree is a mandatory requirement; therefore, experienced candidates with an associate’s degree should make every effort to complete their bachelor’s studies and keep working on their English skills.
