Lawyers seem to have a poor image in the eyes of the public; occasionally, one hears jokes about lawyers, and most of these jokes are satirical toward them. Here are a few classic lawyer jokes, excerpted and organized as follows: One – A surgeon, an architect, and a lawyer engage in a fierce debate: Which profession is the oldest? The surgeon said, “Surgeons are of course the oldest profession.” God is like a surgeon; he created Eve from Adam’s rib, and thus the first ancestors of humanity were born. What could be older than that? ”The architect said, “God was the first architect; he used 7 days to bring order to the chaos of creation and to bring about all things in the world.” What could be more fundamental than the 7 days in which God created the world? ”“Ladies and gentlemen,” the lawyer interjected, “do you know who else, besides lawyers, has the ability to create chaos that even God would need 7 days to settle? ” 2. A butcher rushed into the lawyer’s office and demanded angrily, \"If a dog steals a piece of meat from my shop, should the dog’s owner be held liable for compensation?\" ”““Of course,” the lawyer replied. “Well, your dog just stole half a steak from my shop, worth 20 dollars. ”“Got it. Now, please throw the other half of the steak to my dog, which will cover the $40 in attorney fees from our previous conversation. ” Three “What is 2 plus 2?” ”Housewives, accountants, and lawyers were asked to answer the same arithmetic problem. The housewife replied without hesitation, “4!” ”The accountant said, “3 or 4 are both plausible; let me use a formula to calculate these numbers again.” ”The lawyer countered, \"How much do you want it to be?\" ” 4. A lawyer named “Strange” bought a tombstone for himself. The stonecutter asked, “What will be engraved on the tombstone?” ”The lawyer said, “A man from Chengshi and a lawyer rest here in peace.” ”The stonecutter said, “I’m sorry; Hokkaido law prohibits burials in shared graves. We can change it to ‘An honest lawyer rests here.’” ’”“But who knows who this is? ”The lawyer said. “It’s okay,” said the stonecutter. “When people read this inscription, they will surely shout in unison, ‘That’s strange!’ ’” 5. NASA is recruiting astronauts for missions to Mars; it is a one-way trip, as astronauts can reach Mars but cannot return to Earth. The first applicant is an engineer. “How much compensation do you want? ”The interviewer asked. “1 million dollars,” said the engineer, “I want to donate all of my compensation to MIT. ”The second applicant is a physician. He wants 2 million dollars; he will leave 1 million for his family and donate 1 million to medical research funds. The third applicant is a lawyer; he wants 3 million dollars. “Why do you need so many wires? ”The interviewer was surprised. The lawyer replied, “If you give me 3 million dollars, I’ll give you a 1 million dollar rebate; I’ll keep 1 million for myself, and give the remaining 1 million to the engineer so he can go to Mars.” ” On June 1, a group of people who had been involved in legal disputes met up and discussed what lawyers say. “No, I don’t think all lawyers are bad people. Last year, my lawyer gave me 1,000 dollars. ”A woman said, “I am involved in a personal injury compensation case.” The total cost for attorney fees, expert fees, and appeal fees was 41,000 dollars, yet I only received 40,000 dollars in compensation; my lawyer generously waived 1,000 dollars of that amount for me. ” 7. An employee who stole millions of dollars from the company has been charged criminally; he is afraid of ending up in prison. His lawyer told him, “As long as you still have money in your pocket, it’s absolutely impossible for you to end up in prison.” ”The lawyer was right; when this guy was sent to prison, he used his last penny to pay for legal fees. The underlying message behind lawyer jokes: After all, being a lawyer is a profession for making a living, and lawyers are skilled at what they do; there’s nothing morally wrong with that. However, if making money at all costs becomes a common practice in the legal profession, it is a concerning situation. Every industry, every professional needs a moral bottom line—a line related to one’s character that must be upheld at all costs in certain situations. Without a moral bottom line, the legal profession and its practitioners will become extremely vulnerable: clients will not be able to trust lawyers, lawyers will have nothing to rely on, and both the profession as a whole and individual practitioners will lack the resilience to withstand crises. In the 1740s, the Frenchman Tocqueville published his famous book *America’s ***. While praising the American **system, Tocqueville also pointed out that lawyers counteract the \"majority**\" that such a system might give rise to; just as the nobility drove social change in Europe, lawyers in the United States constitute the only force capable of checking the drawbacks of **society. Tocqueville believed that lawyers represented the rule of law – **the system allows the majority to have the upper hand, while the rule of law enables everyone to raise and debate legal issues regarding their own rights; the two complement each other. Tocqueville did not arbitrarily impart a romantic political hue on American lawyers; it is the lawyers who continuously create \"testing cases\" that enable good laws to move from paper to reality, while bad laws are constantly challenged through lawsuits and thus gradually disappear from legal texts and practice, allowing self-interest to become a field that is continually discovered and expanded. There is still some decency in the American legal profession, precisely because there are lawyers who are not driven by money and who work to preserve the reputation of the entire industry. A group of outstanding lawyers are, in fact, using their actions to defend the reputation of the entire industry.
