Operation and Maintenance of Electrostatic Precipitators I. Preparatory Work Before Operation Before putting an electrostatic precipitator into operation, the following conditions must be met: 1. A thorough inspection of the interior of the electrostatic precipitator is required; there should be no debris inside, and it is also necessary to check whether there are any risks of short circuits between the electrodes; 2. Check whether the surfaces of all insulating parts are clean and free from damage; if not, wipe them clean with anhydrous alcohol, and replace any damaged parts promptly ; 3. The grounding system and other safety facilities must be safe and reliable ; 4. Power on the cathode electromagnetic hammer vibrator for a trial run, and check its operating condition ; 5. Check whether the anode rapping device is in good condition, and whether all rotating points, motors, and reducers rotate smoothly as well as their lubrication status ; Check whether the ash hopper discharge mechanism is operating properly ; 6. The site must be kept clean, with unobstructed roads; all operation and inspection platforms as well as hallway handrails must be in good condition and adequately lit. Protective covers or shields should be installed around all rotating mechanisms. All access panels that lead into high-voltage areas must be equipped with clear safety signs. Electrical safety interlocks must function properly, and the control room should have effective measures for cooling, dust prevention, and fire protection ; 7. Close and lock all manhole covers. II. Operation under load The sequence for operating under load is as follows: 1. Before starting, adjust the transformer taps and other electrical components to meet the requirements for operation under load. 2. The pre-start checks are carried out in accordance with the pre-operation checks. 3. 4 hours before starting the furnace or the system, activate the ash hopper heating to prevent dew formation in the hopper or blockages caused by moisture in the ash. 4. 4 hours before starting the furnace or the system, activate the heat preservation box to prevent dielectric leakage caused by dew formation on insulating components. 5. Activate each ash discharge and shaking device simultaneously when starting the furnace or the system, and turn on the corresponding ash discharge systems. 6. Close the high-voltage isolation switch of the electric field. 7. Once the boiler starts burning coal powder and the temperature of the flue gas entering the electrostatic precipitator is higher than the dew point of the flue gas, the power supply is activated to supply electricity to the electric field; the power supply to the electric field proceeds from the outlet in the direction toward the inlet. 8. Turn on the host computer (IPC system). 9. After the electrostatic precipitator is operating stably, record all voltages and currents and draw the volt-ampere characteristic curve. 10. Adjust the parameters related to anode and cathode vibration to their optimal values. III. Shutdown after operation: The electric dust collector should be shut down in case of system failures, or when the boiler load is below 35% or when the boiler is running on oil. The sequence for shutting it down is as follows: 1. Shut down each high-voltage electric field, in the order from the inlet to the outlet. 2. After the system supply and exhaust fans are shut down, the various rapping mechanisms should continue to operate for 2–3 hours before the rapping devices can be stopped. 3. After the vibration device is shut down, the ash in the ash hopper should be emptied promptly. 4. If the boiler is shut down for more than 24 hours, the heating system can be turned off. 5. The manhole cover can be opened for cooling only 8 hours after the dust collector is shut down; however, it can be opened for cooling 4 hours after shutdown if inspection is required.
