Newly built and commissioned methanol projects in Gansu and Shaanxi

Shaanxi Yutianhua is located in the Yuheng Coal Chemical Industrial Park: it is constructing a project for producing 1.4 million tons per year of methanol from coal and 1 million tons per year of dimethyl ether, as well as a project for producing 2.4 million tons per year of methanol from coal and 800,000 tons per year of MTO. To support the development of the coal chemical industry, a coal mine with an annual production capacity of 10 million tons is also being built there. Sinochem Yiyee has a capacity of 2.4 million tons of methanol; the first phase with a capacity of 600,000 tons is under construction. Shaanxi Yanchang Petroleum Yulin Coal Chemical Co., Ltd. is building the first phase of its facility, which will have an annual production capacity of 200,000 tons of methanol and 200,000 tons of acetic acid, along with related facilities; the estimated investment for this project is 3.1 billion yuan ； The second phase of construction will include facilities capable of producing 1.5 million tons per year of methanol, 400,000 tons per year of acetic acid, 300,000 tons per year of vinyl acetate, 200,000 tons per year of acetic anhydride, and 100,000 tons per year of acetate fiber. The estimated investment for this phase is 12.2 billion yuan; construction is scheduled to begin in 2009, with completion and operation expected by 2013. Lanzhou Lanxing Chemical’s 200,000-ton methanol production facility has been put into operation, while the 600,000-ton methanol plant at Huating Coal Mine is under construction

At the end of last year, Yanzhou Coal’s 600,000-ton methanol project in Yulin came online. Other projects with a capacity of 600,000 tons each, located in Huating, Gansu, and Xianyang, Shaanxi, are under construction and are expected to come online this year; the rest are still in the preliminary planning and construction stages.

Currently, Shaanxi Province has a methanol production capacity of 1.21 million tons per year; 2.3 million tons per year is under construction, 13.2 million tons per year has been approved for development, 15.3 million tons per year is planned, and an additional 3 million tons per year is proposed to be included in Shaanxi Province’s plans. 1. By the end of 2007, Shaanxi Province’s methanol production capacity was 1.21 million tons. Among them: Shaanxi Shenmu Chemical produces 200,000 tons; Yulin Natural Gas Chemical Company produces 510,000 tons (methanol from natural gas); Weihe Coal Chemical Company produces 200,000 tons; Yulin Coal Chemical Technology Company produces 100,000 tons; Changqing Jingbian Methanol Plant produces 100,000 tons; and 4 other companies including Baonit produce a total of 100,000 tons (methanol produced as a by-product of fertilizer production) ； A total of 928,900 tons of methanol were produced throughout the year, representing a year-on-year increase of 32.7%. 2. To date, Shaanxi Province has 2.3 million tons of methanol production capacity under construction. Among them: 400,000 tons at Shaanxi Shenmu Chemical Industry, and 600,000 tons at Yankuang Yulin Energy Chemical will be completed in June-July this year; the second phase of Yulin Coal Chemical Technology, with a capacity of 100,000 tons, will be completed within the same year. 600,000 tons each are under construction at Xianyang Chemical and Shaanxi Sinochem Yiyee. 3. To date, Shaanxi Province has approved a number of methanol projects that have completed their feasibility studies, as well as the methanol-related projects associated with coal chemical industry projects; the total production capacity of these projects is 15 million tons. Northern Shaanxi region: Yutianhua – 1.4 million tons, Yanjiang Petroleum Jingbian – 1.5 million tons, Yanjiang Petroleum Huangling – 1.5 million tons; Datang Group Fugu – 1.8 million tons, Yankuang Yulin Phase II – 1.8 million tons. Guanzhong region: Shaanxi Coal and Chemical Group’s Binchang plant produces 1.8 million tons, the Weinan Dongchen Industrial Zone produces 1.5 million tons; China Energy Company’s Binchang plant generates 1.5 million tons, Xuzhou Mining Group’s Baoji plant produces 1.5 million tons. In addition, Weihe Group produces 400,000 tons, while Xinghua Group produces 300,000 tons (for methanol production via co-production). 4. The additional methanol production capacity included in Shaanxi Province’s plan is 12.6 million tons. These include: 3 million tons for the first phase of the Shenhua Dow Coal Chemicals project; 600,000 tons for the first phase and 2.4 million tons for the second phase of the Shaanxi Xinxing Coal Olefins project; 1.5 million tons for the second phase of the Yanchang Petroleum Group’s Jingbian project; 1.8 million tons for the second phase of Sinochem Yiyee project; 300,000 tons in Wubao (for methanol production from coke oven gas); and 3 million tons for the second phase of the Shenhua Dow Coal Chemicals project.

The 1.8 million-ton project in Binchang, a collaboration between Shaanxi Coal and Chemical Group and Zibo Coal and Chemical Group, is also under construction!

I heard recently that Shenhua is also planning to build a methanol plant with a capacity of 1.6 million tons in Yulin, and the information is definitely reliable.

China is building so many methanol projects – could methanol really be used as gasoline?

Shaanxi Coal Industry Group and Huanghe Mining Company have jointly built coking plants with a capacity of 5 million tons each in Huangling and Hancheng, along with facilities for producing 400,000 tons of methanol

Is it all being wasted? One fuel is used to produce another; it’s a waste of time and money. Do people think coal is just ordinary soil? They have money but still can’t afford to use it properly – what kind of nonsense is this?
