There is a 22KW motor used for mixing; what is a better starting method – star-delta or direct start? I’m not sure if this counts as overload – can the star-delta starter be activated? Thank you
Star-delta starting is possible; first, check what capacity your transformer has. Generally speaking, 22 KW corresponds to a small motor, and direct starting is no problem as it reduces the number of potential failure points. Although the mixer is also considered a heavy-duty device, its gearbox provides significant speed reduction, so the torque reaching the motor side isn’t that high.
Look at the transformer capacity; it should generally not exceed 20% of the transformer’s capacity. A 22KW unit should be able to start directly.
Where are the transformers? Which is faster, a star or a triangle? Isn’t the starting current independent of the load?

It mainly depends on the capacity of your transformer; if it exceeds 20% of the transformer’s capacity, a reduced-voltage starting method should be used. If the transformer has a large capacity, direct starting is sufficient. Star-delta starting is used for light-load startups; if the startup load on the mixer is high, consider other voltage-reduction starting methods.
A 22KW motor is not considered to be under heavy load; the key issue is whether the motor needs to start under load. If so, it is recommended to use a star-delta starting method.
