Representatives from the National Pollution Control Work Symposium inspected the desulfurization unit at Baosteel’s No. 3 sintering plant. At 9:45 a.m. on February 23, 2009, accompanied by Cui Jian, the vice president of Baosteel Corporation, Zhang Lijun, the deputy minister of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, led more than 200 representatives from the National Pollution Control Work Symposium to visit the desulfurization project at Baosteel’s No. 3 sintering plant in its ironmaking facility. The desulfurization unit of Baosteel’s No. 3 sintering plant, with a surface area of 495 m2, utilizes the comprehensive process and equipment technology for desulfurizing sintering flue gas developed primarily by Baosteel Research Institute – specifically the gas-jet swirl flushing technology for such purposes. It is capable of handling 1.3 million Nm3/h of flue gas, making it the largest sintering flue gas desulfurization unit in China at present. The sintering desulfurization project was successfully put into operation on October 30, 2008. Since its commissioning, the system has been operating smoothly and reliably ; The by-product gypsum has good quality and is used to manufacture building materials ; The desulfurization efficiency exceeds 90%, and all technical and economic indicators meet or exceed the design requirements. Baosteel’s flue gas desulfurization technology for sintering features low investment, simple control, stable operation, and high efficiency in removing pollutants, making it suitable for the purification of flue gas from large and medium-sized sintering plants. Minister Zhang gained a detailed understanding of the technology and operational status of Baosteel’s No. 3 sintering desulfurization unit and gave it high praise. The representatives who attended the visit felt that they benefited greatly from this inspection, and were deeply impressed by Baosteel’s efforts in energy conservation and emission reduction. The gas-jet swirl desulfurization technology for sintering flue gas was developed by the Baosteel Research Institute in collaboration with Beijing AVIC TEDA Technology Co., Ltd., specifically tailored to the characteristics of sintering flue gas. It is particularly suitable for desulfurizing the flue gas from large and medium-sized sintering plants. An on-line pilot test facility is available (with a flue gas treatment capacity of 90,000 m3/h, located next to Sintering Machine No. 3 at Baosteel’s stainless steel production plant). This technology has been successfully applied to the desulfurization of three sintering machines with capacities of 180 m2, 224 m2, and 495 m2; they were put into operation in February 2008, October 2008, and October 2009 respectively. The system operates stably, achieves high desulfurization efficiency, and the gypsum produced as a by-product can be sold for use in construction materials. A small amount of desulfurization wastewater (less than 4 tons per unit of 495 m2 sintering machines) is treated simply before being reused in production. It is indeed a reliable technology for desulfurizing sintering flue gas.
