The synthesis technology in coal indirect liquefaction was first discovered in 1923 by German scientists Frans Fischer and Hans Tropsch, and it was named after the initial letters of their names, namely F-T; it is also referred to as F-T synthesis or Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. Thanks to indirect liquefaction technology, it is possible to extract not only conventional petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel, and kerosene from coal, but also high-quality petroleum products like aviation fuel and lubricants, as well as various high-value-added products such as olefins and paraffins.
Fischer-Tropsch synthesis uses coal to produce syngas containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen, which are then used to synthesize aliphatic hydrocarbons and oxygen-containing compounds on a metal catalyst.
