What is the current status of coal-to-natural gas projects in China? At what stage are these projects? Industry experts, please share your insights. Thank you for this. As far as I know, about 8 companies have plans or intentions to develop coal-to-natural gas projects; I’m not sure if there are any others. How is their project progressing?
The Datang Khoshigten Coal-to-Natural Gas Project has received environmental approval and construction will commence in full this year.
In the Petrochemical Industry Revitalization Plan, which was approved in principle on February 19, 2009, a series of large-scale coal chemical projects continued to receive **support. Five large-scale coal chemical projects will be **supported** among the new projects, including three projects namely Datang Keqi (4 billion cubic meters), Datang Fuxin (4 billion cubic meters), and Ordos HuiNeng (1.6 billion cubic meters), along with two coal-to-dimethyl ether projects.
The Shenhua Group’s coal-to-natural gas project has a total investment of 20 billion yuan, with an annual production capacity of 2 billion cubic meters of natural gas. The first phase of the project requires an investment of 14 billion yuan. Currently, efforts are being made to gather preliminary data for the project. It is planned to be located in the Wulamulun coal chemical industry zone, with construction set to begin in May.

The first phase of the project requires an investment of 14 billion yuan. Currently, efforts are being made to gather preliminary data for the project. It is planned to be located in the Wulamulun coal chemical industry zone, with construction set to begin in May. The 12 million cubic meters per day coal-to-natural gas project in Datang Keqi has passed the environmental impact assessment; construction will begin in full this year, with commissioning planned for 2011. The Datang Fuxin 12 million cubic meters per day coal-to-natural gas project is also in the preliminary stage.
The projects in the preliminary approval stage are: 1. Datang Keqi Coal-to-Natural Gas Project, 2. Datang Fuxin, Liaoning Coal-to-Natural Gas Project, 3. Inner Mongolia HuiNeng Coal-to-Natural Gas Project, 4. Shenhua Inner Mongolia Coal-to-Natural Gas Project, 5. Xinwen Mining Yili, Xinjiang Coal-to-Natural Gas Project, 6. Huaneng Hulunbuir Coal-to-Natural Gas Project, 7. The coal-to-natural gas project jointly developed by Datang Coal Industry and CNOOC, and 8. Datang Huayin Coal-to-Natural Gas Project. Among these, the first three have had their preliminary work approved by the National Development and Reform Commission, while the remaining ones are projects that are planned to be constructed. Shenhua only started producing 80,000 Nm of hydrogen from coal liquefied natural gas in 2008, and that process is now almost complete. I’m not sure if the one you’re referring to is the one introduced in 2009 or just this one?
I’m not sure whether the processes and equipment used for coal-to-natural gas production are the same as those in other coal chemical industries, or if there is a different production process
