I don’t understand electricity. Can a three-phase leakage protector be used on a single-phase circuit? Can it still provide protection?
In principle, it’s possible; it’s as if only one of the 3 circuits is used while the other two are not utilized. However, the principle of leakage protection is to detect leakage current, and such an unbalanced configuration increases the probability of false operation of the leakage circuit breaker. (It can be used if the load has a minor simple leakage.)
A three-phase four-wire residual current device can be used with single-phase loads. Unbalanced current in the three phases has no effect on the residual current device; it is sufficient to ensure that the incoming current equals the outgoing current. As long as there is no leakage current, any unbalanced current will be zero. A three-phase three-wire leakage protector cannot be used with single-phase loads, because for it to function, it needs a power supply; the power supply for three-phase three-wire systems is 380V. When a single-phase load is connected, the power supply voltage drops to 220V, and as a result the leakage protector cannot operate properly even when a leakage signal is detected.
It’s no problem at all to use a three-phase four-wire leakage protector for single-phase loads, as it has a N wire designed for this purpose. Three-phase three-wire leakage protectors cannot be used for single-phase loads.
