Experts, given the current economic situation, what products would be suitable to develop using coal as a starting material through gasification? We originally planned to produce 600,000 tons of methanol; all the preparatory work had been done, but the current situation isn’t very favorable. What else can be produced through the gasification route besides methanol and synthetic ammonia?
Under the current economic conditions, the preliminary work for various coal chemical projects is on hold as companies wait to see how things develop. However, large coal enterprises and investment firms with sufficient resources are not affected by this situation. At present, coal-to-methanol and coal-to-oil processes are not viable; there is an excess of methanol, while coal-to-oil production is subject to restrictions. The areas where progress is being made more rapidly are those in coal chemical processes that receive support, such as coal-to-natural gas, the production of fine chemical products from coal, and coal-to-ethylene glycol – products that are in short supply in China. This is just my humble opinion, for reference only!

Acetic acid, anhydrides, etc. can be further synthesized downstream
After coal is used to produce methanol, methanol is then used to manufacture acetic acid, ethyl acetate, formaldehyde, MTBE, MMA, and other substances. However, the cost of acetic acid is currently even higher than the market price
Coal-to-methane (natural gas) production uses an indirect method, which is already a well-established technology; it would be even better if the direct method could be utilized. You might consider the coal-based methanation process developed by Langfang Newao Group as a reference!
