What needs to be modified to convert a heavy oil burner to use coal tar?
Why is there no one? I only know that coal tar contains a large amount of asphalt and is quite corrosive; the oil pump and nozzles need to be replaced. I’m not sure if there are any other parts that need to be altered
Coal tar has a complex composition, containing impurities such as organic acidic substances, and it is quite corrosive. Moreover, the composition of coal tar varies depending on the type of coal; therefore, the burners must be adjusted, while other aspects need to be determined through testing.
Coal tar has a complex and variable composition, and there are many cases of adulteration in the market. The oil contains too many impurities; in some cases, substances such as corn flour are added to it, as well as fibers from woven materials, all of which can easily clog the nozzles. This is something that needs to be taken into consideration; additionally, the source of coal tar is also an issue. It should be noted that good coal tar generally has a lower viscosity than heavy oil, and its heating temperature is also lower. There is often some water in oil. Coking is relatively severe, and the atomization condition varies; it is difficult to use a fixed nozzle, requiring frequent adjustments.

It depends on what type of heavy oil burner is used. Gun-type machines had better not burn coal tar.
It is not recommended to use those that are atomized with high-pressure pumps; Pumps are prone to wear. A two-fluid atomizer using steam or high-pressure air can be used.
Just sharing personal experience: 1. Oil pump. A gear pump must not be used! The screw pump must be replaced. 2. Dehydration. It’s so troublesome! Tar has a higher specific gravity than water; therefore, water remains on top. 3. When replacing tar with heavy oil, it is necessary to use as little heavy oil as possible before adding the tar. Otherwise, the two will \"clump\" together when mixed! It’s very difficult to deal with! 4. Kilns with high temperature requirements should preferably not be replaced! Tar may not reach the required temperature. 5. As for nozzles, it’s not really a big problem, especially low-pressure nozzles. 6. The air distribution needs to be adjusted accordingly. . . . . . .
