Recently, I saw in some design documents that safety valves were specified for the oil dumping tanks in coking units, but most of the oil dumping tanks in coking plants I have come across do not have such safety valves. Please have the forum members discuss it.
I think a safety valve should be installed
For safety, a safety valve should be designed.
Early designs did not include safety valves; however, our oil rejection tank is equipped with one. When we asked President Xu from Luoyang Institute for the reason, he replied that since the oil rejection tank is a pressure vessel, it is not in compliance with design standards to omit a safety valve, which is why one was installed. The oil and gas pipeline following the safety valve (DN100) has a diameter of DN150. However, both the oil and gas lines on the oil stripping tank are DN250; one of them is always in the fully open position. The oil stripping tank is usually connected either to the coke tower or to the vent tower, and both of these vessels are equipped with safety valves. It would be better to install a safety valve on the oil drain tank as well; that would make it even safer.
From a purely design perspective, a safety valve should indeed be installed on the oil dumping tank; the oil dumping tank that we replaced in 2007 was equipped with a safety valve interface (PN4.0 DN150) as a backup; From a practical usage perspective, it indeed lacks much utility, as it is connected to the coke tower in front of the oil stripping tank and to the vent tower behind it, ensuring safety. So although our new oil drain tank has interfaces, the safety valve has not been installed yet.
I’ve seen the drawings from several manufacturers for oil drain tanks, and all of them include safety valves. The designs developed by the Luoyang office are likely to be more conservative, adhering strictly to design standards; however, in my opinion, this safety valve represents only a minor additional investment
There should be one; pressure vessels must be safe, as this is a matter of ensuring our safety. It doesn’t matter if there’s an extra one, but it’s a serious issue if one is missing. The regulations specify what needs to be done, and in the event of an accident, a failure assessment of the pressure vessel is necessary – the design institute cannot afford to take that responsibility
