Our factory produces polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) products, and during the production process approximately 40 tons of waste liquid are generated per hour. The composition of this waste liquid is as follows: 32% methyl acetate, 66% methanol, 0.3% PVA powder, along with small amounts of sodium acetate and other impurities. Is it feasible to use membrane separation technology to filter PVA powder from waste liquid? It is mainly explained from aspects such as equipment investment, filtration efficiency, and operating cycle.

Could the original poster please indicate what the particle size range of the PVA powder is? Otherwise, it’s impossible to estimate!
Whether it is an organic membrane or an inorganic membrane, using powder for filtration is dangerous; only soft particles are suitable for this purpose. Whenever a problem can be solved by traditional methods, there is no need to use membranes for direct treatment!

Firstly, PVA powder is a non-rigid particulate material, and there are already many well-established examples of the use of ceramic membranes in the washing process of nanopowders (including nanodiamond powder); therefore, the risks mentioned on the fourth floor do not exist. Ultrafiltration can not only remove PVA (including the dissolved form). However, PVA is quite sticky, which can cause severe contamination of the membrane; it’s not as simple as some people think.
The biggest drawback of membrane filtration is membrane fouling; 80% of the filtered powder can cause blockages in the membrane pores. If disturbance agents are added to the waste liquid, the blocking problem might be reduced slightly, and perhaps this method could then be viable.
I would like to ask: since PVA swells when it comes into contact with water and becomes very sticky, how can there be powder present in the mother liquor?
