It has been determined that Inner Mongolia’s coal reserves amount to 701.6 billion tons, keeping it in first place nationwide and providing strong support for the development of the coal chemical industry. It is reported that since Inner Mongolia established special funds for geological exploration in 2004, a total of 212 coal mining sites have been discovered or identified in the region, including 92 large-scale mining sites. The new coal reserves identified amount to 477.7 billion tons, of which 404.6 billion tons were added as a result of projects funded by the region’s special exploration funds. In 2008, Inner Mongolia’s coal production reached 457 million tons, a 30% increase on the previous year; the increase for that year accounted for over 55% of the total increase in China’s coal production. The significant increase in mineral resource reserves has promoted the sustained and rapid development of Inner Mongolia’s mining industry. In 2008, the mining industry’s output value in the entire region reached nearly 100 billion yuan (excluding oil and gas minerals), which was 7 times that of 2004; it accounted for 24% of the region’s total industrial output value for that year. Back then, the regional resource tax and taxes on the mining industry amounted to 2.2 billion yuan and 8.4 billion yuan respectively. It is understood that Inner Mongolia’s coal resources not only have large reserves and are concentrated in certain areas, but also include various types ranging from lignite to anthracite. In 2009, the autonomous region **reaffirmed its goal of focusing on the development of coal chemical industry. It will continue to build on its advantages in coal resources, taking clean coal chemistry as a key focus, and by centering on four main areas – fertilizers, methanol, aromatics, and synthetic oils – it will implement a strategy for integrating coal, electricity, and chemical production. This approach aims to develop new types of coal chemical products, thereby achieving cleaner coal processing processes and higher-quality products. At the same time, improve the comprehensive utilization level of coal-based gas and coke oven gas, accelerate the development of specialized coal chemical industry zones, and create coal chemical industry clusters that are organized in groups horizontally and in chains vertically. In the Mengxi region, efforts will continue to focus on large-scale coal liquefaction, coal coking, methanol, and a range of deeply processed products; at the same time, development of dimethyl ether, olefins produced from methanol, and products derived from coal tar will be actively promoted.
