Why is a gas-liquid separation tank installed before the refrigerant in a refrigeration system enters the cold box, to prevent poor heat exchange caused by the mixture of gas and liquid? The medium inside the cold box is already in a vapor-liquid two-phase state~ The question posed by the original poster isn’t very clear
In the cold box, the refrigerant cools the process material through vaporization in the liquid phase. Therefore, the refrigerant is in a fully liquid state inside the cold box; otherwise, its capacity may be insufficient.
The refrigerant circulates within the cooling system. Before entering the cold box, the refrigerant changes from a gas phase to a liquid phase through heat exchange; the installation of a gas-liquid separator ensures that the cold box is filled entirely with liquid, which facilitates subsequent cooling.
The refrigerant in the cold box relies on the siphon principle in many cases, and the separation tank is used to control the liquid level difference through the liquid surface.
It should be to increase the amount of refrigerant entering the evaporator; too much vapor will inevitably reduce the circulation volume, affecting the cooling effect
Furthermore, cooling is primarily achieved by the vaporization of the liquid refrigerant, which absorbs latent heat; the greater the amount of vaporization, the greater the cooling effect. Cooling does not occur effectively when the refrigerant enters in liquid form and exits in liquid form as well
The refrigerant in conventional cooling systems is a mixture of various refrigerant components. Since the boiling points of these different components vary, they exist in different states – gas phase or liquid phase. During the cooling process, there are strict requirements regarding the amounts of gas and liquid phases inside the cooling chamber; therefore, the components need to be separated before entering the chamber in order to control their quantities
Agree with what was said on floor 9 – the key is to control the amount of liquid entering, otherwise the cold box will be flooded. Moreover, handling two-phase flow is also difficult...
