Can epoxy coal tar pitch coatings be used in the anti-corrosion design of buried pipelines in cold regions of the northeast? The construction temperature should be above 5 degrees. What I’m asking is whether the system can function in an environment as low as -30 degrees – my pipes are located below frozen ground! !
I solved this problem myself. The answer is yes! And there’s no problem!
Some manufacturers say it’s possible, while others say it’s not. Generally, the operating temperature range is: -50°C to 120°C in air, up to 150°C for short periods; in media, it’s -20°C to 60°C. It depends on each manufacturer’s practical experience and quality standards. The epoxy coal tar anti-corrosion coating is a thin-type coating with a total thickness of less than 1 mm. It has strict requirements regarding the surface treatment of steel pipes, as well as environmental temperature and humidity – any slight negligence can lead to pinholes, thereby affecting the anti-corrosion effect. During winter construction, when the ambient temperature is below 5°C, the reaction of many two-component curing coatings slows down or comes to a halt, resulting in drawbacks such as the inability of the coatings to cure fully. Some coatings can cure slowly, but their fluidity is greatly reduced; after film formation, the roughness and density of the coating are affected. Too low a temperature will cause the paint to thicken, making it difficult to apply evenly; it will also slow down the drying and hardening process.
