During the pressure swing adsorption process, under the same design conditions, there are significant differences in the amount of adsorbent used and the number of towers employed by different design firms. What is the impact of the effective utilization rate of the adsorbent – that is, the ratio of the adsorbent that is in the adsorption state at any given time to the total amount of adsorbent available – on the design outcomes?
It is related to the composition of the PSA raw materials as well as the impurity content
With a larger number of columns, the effective utilization rate of the adsorbent is higher; whereas with fewer columns, the effective utilization rate is lower. However, while an increased number of columns can reduce the cost of adsorbents, it raises the cost of equipment manufacturing. Therefore, there is an optimal number of columns that meets the requirements regarding the amount of adsorption needed and the adsorption process. Of course, other factors such as operating costs of the installation, product recovery rate, product purity, energy consumption, reliability of the installation, and the ability to switch between different operating conditions must also be taken into account. The number of towers required is determined based on process considerations.
