I noticed that the design of our company includes a stop valve for the flow meter’s bypass. In my opinion, the bypass should be used only during maintenance, and a gate valve would suffice for that purpose. I’m not sure if my understanding is correct; I would appreciate the insights from those who are more experienced
I don’t quite understand what you mean. A globe valve and a gate valve can be the same type of valve; it’s just that their naming conventions are different. A globe valve is named based on its function, while a gate valve is named based on its structure. Therefore, a globe valve can be either a gate valve, or a ball valve, needle valve, or butterfly valve. Gate valves generally serve to shut off or open flow.
There’s a point upstairs; isn’t the leakage from the gate valve on the side path quite large? Won’t the value measured by that flow meter be lower than the actual value?

A stop valve should be used; gate valves do not have the function of regulating flow rate. A gate valve or stop valve can be used as a bypass valve for the flow meter; you should take a close look at the composition of that circuit. If there is a gate valve or some other valve after the flow meter in the control system, as LZ said, it’s meant for maintenance purposes, so it doesn’t matter. In flowmeters without a control system, what is used for bypassing is essentially a globe valve, as it enables more precise adjustment of the flow rate compared to gate valves, thereby ensuring the continuity of production operations.
