The design party for one of our company’s equipment specified that there should be one layer of surfacing metal, but when we communicated with the manufacturing party, they said two layers were required. Two layers should be welded by surfacing: a transition layer and a clad layer. The transition layer dilutes the base metal, while the clad layer ensures corrosion resistance.
It is best to have 2 layers (a transition layer + a surface layer), as this ensures that the surface layer possesses properties such as corrosion resistance or wear resistance, thereby achieving the purpose of surfacing. With only 1 layer, there is a problem of dilution (this issue does not arise if surfacing is done with the same material)
It is best to weld two layers, with the transition layer being diluted.
I think we also need to consider the height of the surfacing layer; if welding is performed again on this layer, the depth of the weld pool reaching the transition layer of the clad layer will affect the welding quality. No matter how many layers are used for surfacing, what’s important in the end is maintaining quality.
