Many chemical process pumps have diameter changes at their inlet and outlet. When the diameter changes in horizontal pipes, eccentric reducers are usually used for this purpose. Some pumps have an inlet with a flat bottom, while others have a flat top; similarly, some outlets have a flat bottom and others a flat top. Is there any standard regulation regarding whether the bottom or top should be flat when there is a diameter change in the horizontal pipes at the pump’s inlet and outlet? Or is it determined by the properties of the material or the location of the storage tanks at the inlet and outlet, or is it considered for the safe operation of the pump?

1. For horizontally suction centrifugal pumps, when the inlet pipe changes diameter, an eccentric reducer should be installed near the pump’s inlet. 2. For centrifugal pumps with horizontal suction, when the pipeline leads to the pump from below, vertical installation with the top level should be adopted; when the pipeline leads to the pump from above, vertical installation with the bottom level is preferred. 3. For the diameter-changing connections of horizontal pipes on pipe racks, bottom-flat eccentric reducers should be used unless there are special requirements. 4. Concentric reducers are recommended for use on vertical pipes.
