In recent years, with the rapid development of China’s automotive, tire, and rubber products industries, this has driven and stimulated the production and growth of China’s synthetic rubber industry. Capacity continues to increase. In 2007, China’s total capacity for synthetic rubber production reached 2.05 million tons per year. With the capacity expansion of the thermoplastic styrene-butadiene rubber (SBS) plant at Maoming Petrochemical Company, the completion and operation of EVA Air’s new 100,000-ton/year SBS plant in Huizhou, Guangdong, and the new 100,000-ton/year styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) plant at Lanzhou Petrochemical Company, by May 2008 China’s total synthetic rubber production capacity had reached 2.38 million tons per year. Of this amount, the total production capacity of the seven main types of synthetic rubber – SBR, polybutadiene rubber, neoprene, nitrile rubber, EPDM, butyl rubber, and SBS – was 1.8875 million tons per year, accounting for approximately 79.3% of the total capacity. Among them, Sinopec’s production capacity is 930,000 tons per year, accounting for approximately 39.1% ; Sinopec: 509,500 tons per year, accounting for about 21.4%. Yanshan Petrochemical is currently the largest producer of synthetic rubber in China, with a production capacity of 270,000 tons per year; followed by Takahashi Petrochemical, with a production capacity of 220,000 tons per year. In the coming years, a number of new synthetic rubber production facilities will come online, including those belonging to Jilin Petrochemical Company, Beijing Yanshan Company, Shanxi Chemical Industry Group (a joint venture), Daqing Petrochemical Company, and Dushanzi Petrochemical Company. It is estimated that by 2012, China’s total synthetic rubber production capacity will exceed 3.5 million tons per year. As production capacity continues to increase, China’s synthetic rubber output is also rising. In 2001, the production of synthetic rubber (including latex and other synthetic rubbers) was only 1.0455 million tons; this figure rose to 2.22 million tons by 2007, with the production of the 7 main types accounting for 1.633 million tons. The varieties with the highest production volumes are SBR, polybutadiene rubber, and SBS in that order; the combined production of these three products amounts to 1.484 million tons, accounting for approximately 90.9% of the total output of the seven major rubber types. Large-scale imports are still required. Since China’s production of synthetic rubber does not meet the actual domestic demand, large quantities must be imported each year. In 2007, China imported 1.414 million tons of synthetic rubber, of which 1.046 million tons were of the 7 main types of rubber. Imports mainly come from neighboring regions such as Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, and Russia in China. Among them, South Korea is the largest source country, followed by Taiwan. Although imports come mainly from South Korea, Taiwan, and Russia, the products are mostly low-cost general-purpose SBR, polybutadiene rubber, and SBS. High-value specialty rubber types, such as butyl rubber, EPDM, neoprene, nitrile rubber, etc., mainly come from Japan, the United States, and Western Europe. In our country, synthetic rubber is primarily imported through the processing trade arrangement; of this total, the volume of goods imported under processing trade accounts for about 37.5%, while the volume imported under contract processing accounts for around 13.5%. Trade under normal commercial terms makes up 36.1%, and small-scale border trade (mainly from Russia) accounts for approximately 4%. While importing, China also exports a small amount of synthetic rubber; in 2007, exports amounted to 81,000 tons, representing a year-on-year increase of about 2.5%. Broad development prospects In recent years, the rapid growth of the automotive industry has accelerated the swift development of the tire industry and the rubber products industry. Domestic consumption of synthetic rubber has also grown rapidly as a result. In 2006, China’s apparent consumption of synthetic rubber reached 3.0685 million tons, surpassing the United States to become the world’s largest consumer of synthetic rubber. In 2007, the apparent consumption volume reached 3.5521 million tons, an increase of about 15.8% on a year-on-year basis. The main sectors that consume synthetic rubber in our country are the tire and shoe manufacturing industries; together, their consumption accounts for about 65% of the total consumption, with the tire industry accounting for 40% of that amount. In 2007, China produced approximately 560 million rubber tires in total (including those for motorcycles), of which around 250 million were radial tires. The rapid development of the tire industry will accelerate the increase in demand for SBR, polybutadiene rubber, and butyl rubber. Our country is also a global shoe manufacturing hub; in 2007, the output of rubber shoes reached 195 million pairs. The increase in rubber shoe production will drive demand for SBS and SBR, which are primarily used in the shoe manufacturing industry. The growth of other rubber products, such as sealing strips, hoses, tapes, conveyor belts, etc., will also drive an increase in the consumption of EPDM, NBR, and neoprene. In addition, some special synthetic rubbers, such as acrylate rubber, will also see development as rubber products become more high-performance and specialized. It is estimated that by 2010, China’s total demand for synthetic rubber will reach around 4.1 to 4.3 million tons, and by 2015 it will reach around 5.1 to 5.3 million tons, indicating broad prospects for its development. Adjust the industrial structure. In the future, China’s synthetic rubber manufacturers should also actively adjust their product portfolio to increase the share of domestically produced products for major rubber types. Develop scarce varieties that are in urgent demand domestically, such as bromobutyl rubber, nitrile rubber and hydrogenated nitrile rubber, ethylene-propylene rubber, solution-polymerized styrene-butadiene rubber, low-cis butadiene rubber, and some special synthetic rubbers, to meet market demands. At the same time, product quality must meet international standards to satisfy customer requirements. In addition, it is necessary to accelerate the development of new varieties, new technologies, new processes, and new equipment in order to create core technologies with independent intellectual property rights. Further develop and strengthen production enterprises and manufacturing bases with international competitiveness, increase efforts in scientific and technological research, accelerate the advancement of production technologies, optimize resource allocation, reasonably adjust the structure of products and industries, move toward a model featuring a variety of products and economic scale, and pay attention to environmental protection and safety by promoting advanced energy-saving technologies. Furthermore, it is necessary to further reduce production costs and enhance market competitiveness. China’s synthetic rubber manufacturers should also take advantage of the abundant pentane resources available domestically to build isoprene rubber production facilities, based on thorough research, in order to reduce their reliance on imported natural rubber. While pursuing large-scale operations, efforts should be intensified to develop a wider range of products with various grades and specialized features. Collaboration with end-users in the development process helps to make these products more targeted and suitable for specific needs. Establish collaborative alliances with similar enterprises both domestically and internationally, particularly those that are downstream users, so as to complement each other’s strengths and jointly develop products with competitive advantages, striving to create a new framework of mutual benefit and synchronized development.
