What sealant should be used at the joints of the pipe insulation sheeting?
I’ve really never encountered the issue raised by the original poster – is sealant used at the joints of the insulation metal sheets? What I see is the connection of the grooves created by mechanical pressing, along with screws used for fastening. Perhaps it's just that I don't have enough experience
At the joints of the insulated pipelines I saw, protrusions and grooves were also created directly through machining, followed by riveting
Personal opinion: If galvanized sheet is used, it is necessary to seal the cut edges with sealant. Since the zinc coating on the galvanized sheet is damaged at the cut site, the corrosion rate is faster than that of ordinary iron sheets; this is due to the principle of electrochemical corrosion. Aluminum foil is used more often these days, but of course it’s not necessary.
Our company uses black castor oil.

Mechanical pressing to connect the grooves and using screws for fastening is acceptable, but the areas with obstacles, namely the cutouts, need to be sealed with silicone to prevent water from entering due to rain. :lol
The protective layer is an aluminum alloy sheet; the sheets are connected to each other using ridged grooves and rivets, with a rivet spacing of 150 mm. For some equipment, insulation or the upper part of storage tanks needs to be sealed with adhesives to prevent rainwater from seeping into the insulation material from above; waterproof materials such as silicone are generally used for this purpose.
Agree with what was said above. We use aluminum alloy sheets here; I heard that no sealant is used. If necessary, using silicone should be fine.

Here, we use aluminum sheets to create protruding and recessed joints, which are then secured with self-tapping screws; sealant is rarely used. However, as a precaution, it is a good idea to apply sealant at the joints of the insulation and cooling protective layers in key areas; generally, waterproof silicone sealant is used, or tin foil can be applied instead. We have started using a new type of Fullex sealing tape for insulating spherical tanks; it is generally not used in other applications.

Sealant should indeed be used; silicone sealant is not suitable. Ordinary silicone sealants cure by removing acid, while sealants release acetic acid during the curing process, which causes corrosion. It is recommended to use silicone from DOW or Loctite (cured without deacidification).
If your goal is merely to seal something, I think a heat shrinkable belt will suffice. Just wrap it around and bake it. If you want to add some protection, you can combine two half-watts together on the outside.
For pipeline insulation that we use commonly, the outer shells are overlapped at the joints and then secured with rivets!
