The entire sentence can be translated as: When the system undergoes startup or regeneration procedures, it should be purged with large amounts of nitrogen or hydrogen to ensure that there is no air present; thus, air-freeing can be regarded as an oxygen-free purging process
Air-freeing means: to remove all air from inside a device or container!
air-freeing: Replacing the air to eliminate any air in the container.
In the operation manuals I translated before, it was always rendered as “catching air”.
