I heard that CNOOC plans to launch an oil refining project in Tanggu, Binhai New Area; it’s still in the feasibility study stage. Does anyone know the details?

China’s four major petrochemical groups have all identified Tianjin as one of the key areas for future development, planning projects such as large-scale oil refining, ethylene production, and liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities. Sinopec Group has developed Tianjin as its second-largest petrochemical industry base in China. Once the ethylene refining and chemical processing integrated project in Tianjin is completed in 2007, Tianjin Petrochemical Company will become a large-scale, world-class petrochemical enterprise with high technology, integrating oil production, chemical manufacturing, and fiber production, and possessing international competitiveness. Sinopec invested 60 billion yuan to develop Tianjin as its largest domestic petrochemical industry base. Between 2005 and 2010, 12 chemical new material projects on a world-class scale were built, with annual production capacities of 200,000 tons of silicone and 130,000 tons of polycarbonate, thereby creating the largest domestic base for chemical new materials. At the same time, a 1.3 million-ton ethylene project is being built to supply petrochemical raw materials for the new chemical materials base. Starting in 2004, CNPC began to expand Dagang Petrochemical’s refining capacity from 2.5 million tons to 5 million tons; it plans to further increase this capacity from 5 million tons to 15 million tons between 2005 and 2007, while also developing downstream petrochemical products at the appropriate time. CNOOC plans to build a 15-million-ton oil refining complex in Tianjin using heavy crude oil from the Bohai Sea around 2010. Bohai Chemical Group will build facilities for the downstream processing of ethylene, including projects with an annual production capacity of 230,000 tons of butyl octanol and 540,000 tons of polyvinyl chloride, thereby creating the largest marine chemical industry complex in China that combines petrochemical and chlor-alkali industries. CNPC also has Sino-Russian Dongfang Petrochemical, with a production capacity of 15 million tons; however, there isn’t much information available regarding CNOOC.

The competition is fierce; Tianjin has great prospects for development, but it’s also hard to live there

Tianjin is now undergoing re-planning, and it is estimated that these large-scale projects have been affected as a result; some of them may need to be relocated.

Binhai New Area in Tianjin is set to become China’s third largest economic region, after the Pearl River Delta and the Yangtze River Delta; and since it’s located by the sea, these major regions will naturally strive to claim territory there

You mean CNPC, right? CNOOC’s 10-million-ton project in Huizhou is under feasibility study; every time I hear about the one in Tianjin, it’s in the east

The problem is the lack of money; once the oil terminal is built, construction can probably start

In the Bohai Bay region, there are so many petrochemical projects!!!! That pollution……

With so many large-scale oil refining and chemical projects being launched, why has no one heard about any job openings in those areas?
