Are active chlorine and chloride ions the same indicator? What is the difference between them?
No. Active chlorine generally refers to chlorine with oxidizing properties such as hypochlorite ions, whereas chloride ions do not.
There is a fundamental difference between the two. Active chlorine refers to oxidizing forms of chlorine, such as ClO-, and its concentration in water is generally very low, ranging from a few tenths to several ppm ； Chloride, on the other hand, is what we commonly refer to as Cl-. Its concentration in water varies depending on the type of water; for example, it is in the range of several dozen ppm in the Yangtze River, while it can reach tens of thousands of ppm in seawater.
