Generally, dome-shaped storage tanks are used to store refined oil, while external floating roof tanks are used to store crude oil. Is it possible for external floating roof tanks to be used for storing refined oil as well (in order to address the issue of volatility)?
It seems that refined oil is generally stored in internal floating roof tanks, right? The dome tank stores heavy oil. .
In the past, gasoline was usually stored in tanks with internal floating roofs; now, diesel is also typically stored in tanks of this type! ! ! This saves land (by allowing smaller spacing). :handshake :victory:
Generally, storage tanks for refined oil are dome tanks and internal floating roof tanks; external floating roof tanks seem to be used rarely. For gasoline, internal floating roof tanks are used; for diesel, a dome structure with a vent valve is sufficient. I’ve never seen external floating roof tanks used for storing refined oil. The storage capacity of finished oil tanks is generally not large, so internal floating roof tanks are used.
We also use domed structures a lot for crude oil. For those over 10,000, an external floating roof is used. For refined oil products, internal floating roofs are generally used for gasoline, while arch roofs are used for diesel. If the components in diesel are relatively light, an internal floating roof is also used.
Internal floating roofs are used for volatile light petroleum products such as gasoline, and they are also employed for certain toxic oils like benzene. Vault tanks are used for diesel, wax oil, residue, and other materials with relatively low volatility. :)
Under normal circumstances, crude oil is stored in floating roof tanks. Gasoline is stored in tanks with internal floating roofs. Previously, dome tanks were commonly used for diesel, but now internal floating roofs are preferred. The reason is that GB50160-1992 (version 99) specifies different spacing requirements for arches depending on whether fire protection measures are in place: it seems to be 0.6D when fire protection is available, and 0.75D when no such protection is present. However, in the new version of GB50160, the value of 0.6D has been removed; everything is now set at 0.75D. This inevitably leads to an increase in the spacing between storage tanks. Therefore, the trend for diesel storage tanks in the future should be to use internal floating roof tanks! I’ll post this new version of the regulation on Monday for everyone to take a look. As for the poster’s claim that refined oil is stored in floating roof tanks, I haven’t seen that done yet, haha!
The choice between a fixed-roof and a floating-roof tank is primarily based on safety considerations; one can find out more by referring to the GB50160 design standards. In general, either one will work. Fixed-roof tanks are equipped with a flame arrester below the breather valve, so safety is ensured. If the storage tank has a large diameter, an external floating roof is generally used. If the viscosity of the stored oil is high, an internal floating roof should not be used, otherwise the floating disk is likely to get stuck. Such oils usually have a high flash point, such as paraffin oil and residue oil; there is no risk of explosive combustion of vapor, so it is sufficient to install a larger vent pipe on the top of the tank. If the flash point of the stored oil is below room temperature, that is, for oils of Category A B and Category B A, it is advisable to use internal floating roofs. Such oils are prone to volatilization; by using internal floating roof tanks, losses caused by evaporation can be reduced, and safety risks can also be diminished. Crude oil tanks are generally large containers used for storing raw materials, with capacities of tens of thousands of cubic meters, and they feature external floating roofs. Due to the wide variety of refined oil products, refined oil tanks are generally under 5,000 cubic meters in size; very large tanks are rare. Investment also needs to be considered in tank construction. When the tank capacity is greater than 10,000 m³, external floating roof tanks are more cost-effective, as it reduces the investment required for the tank roof ; Finished oil has a fast turnover rate and a wide variety of types, so storage tanks larger than 5000 m³ are generally not required. Secondly, refined oil usually refers to gasoline or diesel, which has a low flash point and is prone to vaporization. External floating roof tanks, lacking an arch structure, are highly affected by temperature changes; especially in the summer when temperatures are high, the refined oil evaporates more rapidly, resulting in greater losses. Furthermore, external floating roof tanks are less safe than roofed tanks.
Based on our company’s construction experience, crude oil is generally stored in floating roof tanks, gasoline is stored in internal floating roof tanks, and diesel is also stored in internal floating roof tanks or nitrogen-sealed vault tanks. Finished oil products generally do not use external floating roofs, as their volatility is much higher than that of crude oil; using such roofs is not effective in this case. Moreover, tanks that employ external floating roofs are usually very large in volume, while finished oil storage tanks are not that large – their capacity generally does not exceed 10,000 cubic meters

Generally, internal floating roof tanks are used for storing lighter oils; however, if it isn’t considered a waste, internal floating roof tanks can certainly also be used to store heavy oils. This is actually not a very good question to ask!
I’m aware of useful floating roof tanks for storing diesel. From a technical perspective, it is possible to use floating roof tanks for storing refined oil as long as the primary and secondary seals are reliable; however, this approach is generally not adopted.
Finished oil cannot be stored in external floating roofs for various reasons, including rainwater, dust, and other factors.
To answer: The definition of finished oil is somewhat broad; generally, lighter oils use internal floating roofs, while heavier oils use external floating roofs.
I think one of the more important aspects is loss; refined oil, especially gasoline, has a high degree of volatility. The use of internal floating roof tanks results in relatively lower losses, while other types of tanks lead to greater losses
For finished light oils, internal floating roof tanks are generally used, and the tank capacity is relatively small. Additional note for floor 19: Another major reason is the cleanliness of the oil! Refined oil is generally used directly. If floating roof storage tanks are used, the quality of the oil can easily decline due to weather conditions such as rain and snow, which makes it unsuitable for use!
