I have never worked with separators, but I have seen related drawings; for example, for cyclone separators, the dimensions of the cyclone itself can be determined. But how are the inlet and outlet dimensions of the outer container determined? Can the inlet and outlet dimensions of the container be determined based on the nominal size of the material and process piping? Please help, thank you!
I once calculated the size of the device inlet, but I’ve forgotten the specific formula. It’s necessary to ensure that the flow rate entering the device inlet does not exceed a certain value; the size of the device inlet cannot be determined solely based on the size of the pipe :)

In the case of cyclone separators, the determination of the inlet and outlet points must be considered as a whole, taking into account factors such as the separation efficiency of the cyclone separator, pressure values, residence time, and flow velocity. But I think knowing the cyclone separator size doesn’t allow one to determine the external dimensions; it’s just for reference!
I agree with your view. My question is how to determine the dimensions of the inlet and outlet ports on the pressure vessel outside the cyclone. In other words, there is a cylindrical tank with sealed ends outside the cyclone, and this tank has openings that connect to the process pipelines; I want to know how to determine the engineering diameter of these inlet and outlet ports on the tank
