How should used batteries be disposed of?

Discarding used batteries in the natural environment can cause serious pollution of water sources; once they enter the human body, they can damage the nervous system, blood-forming functions, and bones. However, in our area, there are no organizations that handle the recycling of used batteries. Under such circumstances, it’s inevitable that some people will dispose of batteries in the natural environment. How should used batteries be disposed of so as not to pollute the environment?
The situation here is not optimistic either; large supermarkets have recycling bins and the like, but there is no dedicated department to manage and handle this process. There have been instances where individuals generated too much waste to be processed, as dealing with it involves complicated procedures. Therefore, intentional disposal into the natural environment is inevitable, and used batteries can be commonly found in landfills. Suggestion: Increase publicity efforts and take effective measures to prevent pollution. What can be done now is to store it at the designated location; it cannot be discarded casually!
To ensure that batteries do not cause pollution to the environment, the most effective approach at present is centralized recycling. Of course, developing mercury-free batteries is also a good option, but such batteries would be more expensive, and it’s uncertain when they will be developed. Therefore, as mentioned earlier, it is necessary to increase awareness and take effective measures to prevent pollution from occurring. What can be done now is to store it at the designated location; it cannot be discarded casually!
Used batteries are already causing serious environmental pollution, and to address this issue, they must be recycled.
