Usually what we do are heat tracing pipes, which use the radiant heat of heat media such as steam, hot water or thermal oil to heat the main pipe to achieve the insulation effect of the main pipe. Now I encountered a project that requires cold fluid pipes to be accompanied by cooling. I think this is not effective because the heat can radiate outward and be quickly transferred to the heat medium pipe. However, the cooling pipeline should absorb heat inward, that is, it should absorb heat from the main pipe to achieve the purpose of cooling. I don’t know how effective this heat transfer effect is. I have never come into contact with cooling pipes before. I think it should not be external heat tracing, but should be in the form of a heat exchanger (such as a sleeve heat exchanger, jacketed pipe, etc.), and then the pipes should be kept cold.
The heat tracing pipe is generally placed at 45 degrees below the material pipe to form natural convection when exchanging heat with the material pipe. Therefore, if a cooling pipe must be built, it must be placed at 45 degrees above. In fact, most methods are to use a heat exchanger to cool to a certain low temperature, and then use polyurethane cold insulation on the pipes. The effect is already good. If the low temperature needs to be strictly controlled to prevent over-temperature reactions, the effect of using a frozen brine jacketed tube is much better. When comparing the heat exchange effects of heating pipes and cooling pipes, as long as the temperature difference, heat exchange surface (that is, the surface area of the tracing pipe), and the flow rate are the same, the effect will be the same. But placement is important.
