Sasol in South Africa is currently the only international company in the world that carries out large-scale coal liquefaction to produce synthetic fuels. As early as 1955, Sasol built its first coal-to-oil plant in Sasolburg, 80 kilometers south of Johannesburg, the largest city in South Africa. After the oil crisis of the 1970s, the second and third factories were built successively in Sekonda, 120 kilometers southeast of Johannesburg. Sasol uses indirect conversion technology, first gasifying coal and then producing fuel oil and chemical products. Currently, 113 chemical products are produced, including gasoline, diesel, wax, ethylene, propylene, polymers, ammonia, alcohols, aldehydes, and others. In 2001, 7.3 million tons of refined oil were produced; the production volume reached 7.4 million tons in 2002 and 2003. The Yulin project carried out in cooperation with Shenhua has now been canceled, leaving only Shenhua’s indirect liquefaction of coal in Ningxia

Sasol is currently the only company in the world to possess a coal liquefaction plant, and it owns the Feistel synthesis technology, which represents the typical method for indirect coal liquefaction that is currently in commercial use abroad. At present, the company’s 3 liquefaction plants consume 45.9 million tons of coal per year. Their main products include gasoline, diesel, wax, gas, ammonia, ethylene, propylene, polymers, alcohols, aldehydes, and a total of 113 other substances; the overall production volume is 7.6 million tons, of which oils account for around 60%. These plants meet 28% of South Africa’s demand for gasoline and diesel. The SAS fixed-bed fluidized-bed reactor owned by the company is the largest Fischer-Tropsch synthesis reactor to date, with a diameter of 10.7 m and a height of 28 m, and an individual production capacity of 2,500 t/day. The cumulative $7 billion in investment has already been recouped. The current annual output value is 4 billion dollars, with annual profits of nearly 1.2 billion dollars.

Back on the 14th floor: there’s no problem with the reactor itself, but catalyst pulverization is quite severe during operation; we’ve been working to address this issue all last year. At the beginning of this year, I heard that the problem had been resolved.
