To ensure that the public has access to safe drinking water, the Environmental Protection Department, the Construction Department, and the Water Resources Department of Jiangsu Province have recently joined forces to carry out initiatives to improve drinking water sources across the province. The 3 departments have specified: immediately halt the approval of chemical projects outside chemical industrial parks. The environmental protection authorities will conduct thorough inspections of the environmental conditions in 111 centralized drinking water source protection areas at the county level and above, as well as of industrial pollution sources upstream of these areas. They will also examine the operation of wastewater treatment facilities in various chemical industrial parks, wastewater discharge levels, and the existence of emergency response plans. In addition, they will check whether chemical manufacturing enterprises outside these parks are discharging pollutants in compliance with regulations. There will be a comprehensive audit of chemical enterprises located within drinking water source protection areas and their upstream regions; those enterprises that pose environmental risks to drinking water safety will be ordered to suspend operations immediately for rectification, so as to completely eliminate such risks. Immediately halt the approval of chemical projects located outside chemical parks (chemical concentration areas or hubs), and accelerate the process of bringing chemical manufacturing enterprises into these parks and areas.
This is a good thing for both the country and its people; chemical industries coming to the industrial parks, with unified planning and centralized treatment of waste materials – it deserves support.
