The function of the methanol production unit using coke oven gas is to convert methane in the coke oven gas that has been carefully desulfurized into hydrogen and carbon monoxide. The equipment used is a preheating furnace; the problem is that the coils inside this furnace cannot withstand high temperatures. It’s likely that many factories have encountered this issue – our factory has had it as well. Many of the preheating furnaces designed by Huade No. 2 Institute have coil leaks; we use 304H material for ours. I think on the one hand, the processing is not up to standard; on the other hand, frequent start-ups and shutdowns, along with too rapid temperature changes, reduce the lifespan of the material.
During this maintenance period, more than 20 leakage points were found in the preheating furnace coils of our company, most of them located at the elbows. The design institute should modify the design to enable methanol production plants to operate for longer periods and achieve greater benefits.
With so many leaks, isn’t there a risk of explosion when the preheating furnace is turned on during normal production?

The material for the furnace tubes should be HK40, which is better than 304. Generally, overheating and damage to the furnace tubes occurs most easily when driving or making emergency stops; without overheating, proper curing will not take place.
